I've got a bit of an obsession with steps, stairs and staircases. I don't quite know what it is about them. You'll notice in a couple of my collections that there are a few images of stairs.
Is it the hint of a journey?
Or the mystery of the destination at the top?
Perhaps it's simply the industrial aesthetic, where form follows function - glass and steel against sandstone and concrete.
There are plenty of examples in Hobart, and some that I seem drawn to the most. Catch a peek of these stairs as you (ironically) descend Kelly's Steps. They look great at night, and in this case I love creating a black and white rendering of this scene. I've been experimenting lately setting my camera to view the image in BnW (I'm recording in RAW and .jpg at the same time) which is helping me to see the tonal ranges of a scene as I frame it.
I'm no Ansel Adams, but I'm practicing and enjoying the 50 shades of grey ....
