This is one of my favorite images from the recent short trip up the West Coast of Tasmania, to visit some old familiar haunts - and shoot lots of images of course!
Sometimes I find that the process of taking a photo is just as rewarding as the editing process or the final result. In this case I think I actually met Denny - although I didn't ask the old fella's name - he just looked like a Denny. "You can walk along the jetty if ya like. Nice day eh". I feel a bit intrusive with a camera poking into people's lives and situations, but sometimes that's the only way to tell a story with the image.
I think I took about 20 versions of this scene, exploring different ways to represent it. I love the 'layered' nature of the image, especially the landscape orientation with the barge in the foreground, the old boat in the middle ground and then Denny's place in the background. I often start to shoot quite wide, to see if context adds anything to the scene, and that helps to define extent of future iterations. Of course there's almost always a black and white version ;-)
Which do you prefer?
